British colonization of Malaya:

In 1824 AD, a treaty was signed between England and the Netherlands. The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 was designed to solve many of the issues that had arisen due to the British occupation of Dutch properties during the Napoleonic Wars. The treaty stipulated that England would control the Dutch colonies in Malaya in return for ceding its colonies in Java and all the islands of Indonesia to the Netherlands.

Britain concentrated its maritime and commercial activities in Singapore. Then, the British seized the northern part of Borneo Island and divided it administratively into three parts: Sarawak, Sabah, and the

British-protected Sultanate of Brunei.

These areas became important British commercial and military centers and later made up the eastern coast of Malaysia. Revolutions erupted in many areas in the Malaya against the British. These revolutions served as a warning to Britain. Some of the sultans of Malaya joined the Malays in their revolutions. The British never savored stability in the Malay Peninsula. The beginning of the twentieth century marked an overwhelming revolution that was led by the renowned Mujaahid Shaykh Al-Haadi, who studied in Egypt at the hands of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Abdu.

When Shaykh Al-Haadi returned to Malaya, he published a magazine entitled Al-Imaam after Imaam Muhammad ‘Abdu. The magazine had a significant impact in bonding the independence movements in the Malay Peninsula with the Islamic renaissance in the Arab East. These Jihaadist movements, which exhausted the British occupiers, paved the way for the Japanese encroachment on the Malaya at the beginning of World War II.
