Muslims in Equatorial Guinea

Islam was introduced to Equatorial Guinea in the late fifth century AH at the hands of Al-Muraabiteen. They sent Muslim preachers and callers to Allaah from Morocco to various parts of Africa. Islam was also introduced to Equatorial Guinea by Muslim merchants and workers from Nigeria. In the first half of the sixteenth century AD, Islam began to spread among the members of the Fang tribe and its elderly, thanks to the Fang tribe of Cameroon.

Spain colonized Equatorial Guinea in 1194 AH / 1879 AD, and strove to hinder the spread of Islam, placing obstacles in the way of the Islamic Da‘wah. Brutal and fanatical practices by Spain in Equatorial Guinea brought resembled the horrific memories of the Crusades. Equatorial Guinea was granted independence in 1388 AH / 1968 AD.

Most Muslims in Equatorial Guinea live in the Río Muni region, while most Catholic Christians live in Fernando de province, which is the most urban. The official language is Spanish and people speak Bantu language.
The migration of a large number of Nigerian workers and traders (about 40 thousand) to Equatorial Guinea fostered the spread of Islam in recent times. Missionary activities are one of the major challenges facing Muslims there.
