Means of victory in ‘AYN JAALOOT 1

The first means:
It is the greatest one; that is, to have faith in Allaah, the Almighty, and decisive belief that victory comes from Him Alone. That is why Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, gave special care to the faith-related side of the army and the Ummah, intensified the role of the scholars, and urged his people to fight the Tatars on the basis of Islamic, rather than nationalistic or racial premises.

He summarized this in ‘Ayn Jaaloot Battle with his famous words: "O my Islam", rather than "O my Egypt" or "O my dominion", or "O my Arabism". The end in the sight of Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, was very clear, and his identity was purely Islamic. This clear vision and the pure identity formed a direct means, if not the greatest means of victory.

This matter was deep-rooted in Qutuz as clearly shown when he took refuge with Allaah the Almighty during the severe crisis that he encountered in ‘Ayn Jaaloot. He stood and implored Allaah saying: "O Allaah! Help Your slave Qutuz emerge victorious over the Tatars!" Supplication is an act of worship. It is a confession of one's servitude to Allaah the Almighty. It is a clear announcement that one is in dire need of Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds.

In all his steps towards preparation, Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, knew well that he would not succeed unless Allaah the Almighty Willed. For this reason, he supplicated Him persistently and submissively. He never attributed victory to himself, but he always attributed victory to Allaah the Almighty, for he knew that he, more often, asked Allaah the Almighty for victory, and Allaah the Almighty Conferred victory and success upon him; so, all blessing and favor be to Allaah the Almighty.

The second means: to unite the Muslims
The divided Ummah is not granted victory. Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, since the very day of his accession to the Throne of Egypt, did his best to unite the Muslims. He pardoned the Bahri Mamluks, and joined them to the Mu‘izzi Mamluks, communicated with the Ayyubid emirs of Shaam, and joined to his forces the Syrians, Khwarezmids and volunteers, regardless of their origin and race. Thus, he succeeded in realizing what was thought to be impossible.

The third means: to whet the spirit of Jihaad among the Ummah
Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, became certain that Jihaad would be the only way to restore the rights of the Muslims, and that peace, though a good choice under certain circumstances could hardly be chosen if the rights of the Muslims are stolen, their blood is shed, and they are forced to leave their homes. Peace should not be chosen unless all rights are completely restored; we become strong, and have deterrent power, sufficient to overpower the enemies in case of violating a peace treaty. Without that, it would be surrender rather than peace, which is not acceptable under Sharee‘ah.

In fact, the Egyptians were ready to accept Jihaad, which they had regarded seriously since the Crusades. For this reason, it was easy for Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, to remind the people of Jihaad as one of the main causes of victory; and that the Islamic Ummah should comprehend well that it has no way to raise its head on earth other than Jihaad. Jihaad is the culminating peak of Islam, and whoever adheres to it is in the highest position among all the people on earth.
