Renowned American Muslim preacher Sheikh Yusuf Estes was named the Islamic Personality of 2012 at the 16th Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA) for his huge efforts in preaching the true image of Islam in the west.
“When he was told of his selection, he was happy," Ibrahim Bumelha, Chairman of the Award Organizing Committee, told the media on Tuesday, July 10, WAM news agency reported.
“He expressed his thanks and gratitude to Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and to the award's organizing committee members,” Bumelha added.
The announcement was made at the Cultural and Scientific Association in Dubai on Monday.
The nomination was declared at the 16th session of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award for spreading the teachings of Holy Quran, and for his services to Islam, Muslims and humanity.
Estes was chosen among a group of nominees for his unremitting efforts to spread and preach Islam's tolerant teachings and values in the West.
“Dr Estes is highly loved by young Muslims,” Bumelha said.
Several scholars, scientists, presidents and institutions have won the Islamic Personality Prize over the past 15 sessions.
The first winner was Late Sheikh Mohammed Metwally Al Shaarawy of Egypt in 1997.
His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was the last winner in 2011.
Renowned Scholar
Sheikh Estes was born in 1944 in Texas to a musically talented Protestant family.
He became a Muslim in 1991 after meeting an Egyptian named Mohammed. Ever since, he became very active in preaching true message of Islam in the west.
“Sheikh Yusuf Estes, born in 1944, is often featured as guest presenter and keynote speaker at various Islamic events,” Bumelha said, Khaleej Times reported.
“He frequently appears on various Islamic satellite TV channels, in addition to his personal websites yusufestes.com and islamtomorrow.com.”
He is always studying Islam, the Arabic language and the Quran while working day and night to present the correct message of Islam.
“After embracing Islam, Dr Estes pursued Arabic language and Qur’anic studies in Egypt, Morocco and Turkey,” Bumelha said.
“From 2004, Dr Estes regularly appeared on the Islam Channel, as well as Peace TV and Huda TV.”
The renowned scholar started a free-to-air Internet and satellite TV channel called GuideUS TV which currently broadcasts commercial-free programming on Islam 24/7.
He has also set up various websites directed toward English speaking Muslims which include TubeIslam (a Muslim video sharing site), ChatIslam (a Muslim chat room), and WorldPreschool (a learning site for young children).
He is also the Director of www.islamtomorrow.com (http://www.islamtomorrow.com/) and National Chaplain WAMY, Virginia, USA.
