In 1784 AD, and after the control of Muslims in Burma was weakened, Buddhist Burma occupied the Muslim Arakan State. It remained under occupation until it was colonized by the British in 1822 AD. When the British withdrew from Burma in 1948 AD and granted it full independence, they annexed Arakan to Burma against the wishes of its Muslim people, i.e. Rakhine people who are known as the Rohingya.

Henceforth, the Rohingya Muslims became the targets of brutal campaigns of ethnic cleansing that are similar to those that are carried out in Bosnia, Kashmir, Chechnya and other places in the world. These campaigns aim at eradicating the Muslim population and establishing a Buddhist state that is completely free of Muslims.

After the Burmese occupation of Arakan, more than two million Muslims were expelled and displaced as a result of the repressive practices that were carried out by the Burmese authorities. Most of the refugees of Arakan are now in Bangladesh and Pakistan, as well as Saudi Arabia and some countries in the Persian Gulf, in addition to a few groups in the countries of Southeast Asia, Europe, America and Australia. Mass displacement operations have been carried out in four stages.

The first was in 1938 during the British occupation, the second was in 1948 with the start of the Burmese occupation, and the third was in 1978 when the conflict between the Buddhist government and the Muslims intensified. Escalating disputes resulted in the flight of about three hundred thousand Muslims to Bangladesh and Pakistan. The last displacement operation was in 1991.

The ethnic and religious cleansing of Muslims is still ongoing in Arakan. These horrible practices were carried out due to the isolation of this region from the rest of the world in addition to the fact that all the governors of these provinces are Buddhists. Muslims who survived such repressive practices and remained in Burma are targets of eradication through genocide and birth control programs.

Add to that, the horrible rapes of Muslim women, some of whom die due to rape. Muslims are also victims of forced labor in concentration camps. Hundreds of Muslims were transferred from their posts unfairly. Muslims are banned from entering universities and colleges.

Buddhist Burmese authorities issued a ban on the establishment of new mosques and also prohibited the repairing or reconstruction of old mosques. They demolished the mosques that were built or repaired in the region during the past ten years. Based on this ban, the Burmese authorities have so far demolished more than 72 mosques and 4 religious centers. They have arrested 210 religious scholars and seekers of knowledge and have killed 220 Muslims.

Due to the fact that there is no powerful neighboring Islamic state to Burma to support and espouse the cause of the Muslims in Arakan, the Burmese regime takes advantage of the opportunity every now and then to displace Muslims, loot their wealth and rob them of their property, and this forces them to migrate from their land.
