The fourth means: preparing well for the battle
Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, utilized all material means available to strengthen his army, in regard with preparation of weaponry, training soldiers, arranging rows, putting the suitable war plan, choosing the proper place, concluding the appropriate diplomatic alliances, and setting up the atmosphere in the best way. In this context, it is sufficient to refer to the good wonderful bright appearance of the Mamluk armies, as if they were going to a parade rather than a ferocious battle.

Whoever does not prepare for a battle, and, at the same time, expects victory, is, to be sure, under illusion. That is one of the established Norms of Allaah the Almighty

The fifth means: to be an example to follow
It is the example presented by Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, to his soldiers and the people of his Ummah in all acts. Upbringing by way of being an example to follow is a thousand times more efficient than delivering sermons and writing articles. Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, was an example to follow in his good morals, clean hand, Jihaad, faith and forgiveness.

The soldiers never felt that they were strangers to Qutuz; he got down, by himself, into the trenches of the soldiers and fought along with them, which motivated them to fight along with him.

The sixth means: not to ally with the enemies of this Ummah
Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, neither allied with the Tatars, in spite of the large gap between them in power and the number of soldiers and war equipment, nor with the Christian emirs of Shaam, in spite of his dire need for this. Many leaders, before Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, fell into the trap of allying with the disbelievers, under the pretext of keeping themselves and then their peoples, as they claimed, far from war.

However, they committed a hideous mistake under Sharee‘ah, or say committed complex mistakes. To avoid Jihaad given the dire need for it is indeed a great mistake; and to bring up the people to submit to their enemies is a big mistake too; and to ally with the enemy and regard it as a friend is a third mistake. But Qutuz, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, had a clear vision.

He gained this clarity of vision from his adherence to the divine Law of Allaah the Almighty. He read in the Noble Book of Allaah His Saying (which means): {O you, who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allaah Guides not the wrongdoing people.} [Quran 5:51] That is indeed a very dangerous warning given by Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds. How foolish, and even weak in faith is the one who listens to this warning and then takes no heed of it!
