The Tatars return once again to Azerbaijan

The Tatars returned once again to the Muslim territory of Azerbaijan and entered the Muslim city of Maraghah, which was, amazingly, governed by a woman. I do not know why the Muslims gave the reign to a woman especially during that critical time, unless the city was short of men fit for leadership.

The Tatars besieged Maraghah and held catapults around it, and went on striking it from all sides. When its inhabitants came out to fight, the Tatars brought forward the Muslim captives they had taken from different countries to fight on their behalf, while the Tatars sought protection behind them, and whoever among the captives was slack in the fight, would be killed.

The Muslim captives, thus, fought with their Muslim brothers of Maraghah, aspiring to live longer. Exalted Be Allaah! Were death to come inevitably, then, why should one fight his brothers before he is killed? Had the captives turned against the Tatars out of zeal for their Muslim brothers of Maraghah, this would have provided an opportunity to save the lives of some Muslims. But (unfortunately), the people were overwhelmed with misconceptions and blind sights; and there is no strength and no power save in Allaah.

The Tatars entered the Muslim city of Maraghah in 4 Safar 618 A.H., and struck with the sword all its inhabitants, and the dead were so innumerable they could not be counted. They robbed everything fit for them which was portable, and burnt what they could not carry. For example, they brought the valuable silk, as much as hills and then set it on fire.

According to Ibn Al-Atheer, May Allaah Have mercy upon him, a Tatarian woman would enter a house and kill its dwellers. He mentioned that he heard, by himself, from one of the inhabitants of Maraghah, that a Tatarian man entered a county having one hundred Muslim men, and went on fighting them one after the other until he killed them all, and received no harm from anyone. The people were covered with humiliation, and became no longer able to avert from themselves any harm, be it much or little; we seek refuge with Allaah from failure.
